What is an Extended Cycle or Fresh Hold?

Different brands have different names for their extended cycle, but they are basically the same thing. Once the washing machine has completed its regular cycle, it continues to spin the clothes occasionally to keep them fresh.

Typically, the washing machine will spin your clothes every so often over the course of several hours after the clean cycle has been completed. So, basically, you have several more hours to move your clothes over to the dryer.

Popular Machines with Extended Cycles

There are three major brands that offer some sort of Extended cycled or Fresh Hold. Those appliances are:

• Maytag Fresh Hold: Maytag offers many appliance models that have the Fresh Hold features built into the machine. Some of the models will allow your clothes to have a Fresh Hold time of 16 hours while others offer 24 hours of Fresh Hold time.

• Electrolux Extended Refresh: On select Electrolux models they offer what is called an Extended Refresh mode which keeps “loads that have remained inside the machine for whatever reason and will use a rinse plus spin cycle to keep the laundry load fresh. This cycle will continue to operate on intervals for up to 12 hours.”

• Whirlpool Fresh Care: Whirlpool also offers an option to keep your garments fresh for longer. Whirlpool has a Fresh Care option that steams and tumbles your laundry for up to 6 hours after the cycle has finished.
