Can You Replace a Range Hood with an Over the Range Microwave?

There have been many times that our customers come in and ask if they can replace a range hood with an over the range microwave. The question typically comes after they move into a new home and have a range hood but want a microwave instead.

Usually, customers are motivated to put a microwave above their oven to save counter space and for increased convenience. The short answer to their question is, yes, you can replace a range hood with an over-the-range microwave.

However, there are some things to consider before you tear out your microwave.

Thinking About Removing a Range Hood? Consider These Things First

We had one situation where a woman wanted an over-the-range microwave and so she went and ripped out her hood without creating a plan. We then had to explain to her the things that she overlooked.

So, let us talk about the thing she should have considered.

Cabinet Size

When you have a hood, you don’t need a lot of space between the cabinets and the top of the stove - since the vent isn’t very large compared to the microwave. If you just remove the vent, there isn’t going to be enough room between the stove and the cabinets to place a typical microwave.

You have two options in this case:

1. You can create brand new cabinets for the microwave to attach that are smaller than what you originally have. The cabinets will have to be strong enough for the microwave to be screwed into. Creating custom cabinets can get expensive if you don’t know what you are doing. Some people just don’t have anywhere to place their cookie sheets except for underneath the oven.

2. You can get a mini microwave. The mini microwave is smaller than a typical microwave so it can fit into the smaller space.

Electrical Outlet

In the example above, when the woman removed her hood, she realized that her hood was working on a battery instead of an outlet - which is why the hood wasn’t working anymore. Therefore, the electric microwave didn’t have an outlet to function.

She had to then call an electrician to install an outlet in order for the microwave to hook up to an electrical outlet. The outlet is typically inside the above cabinets.

Venting System

The last thing that we want our customers to consider is the venting system. Where is the vent? How is the vent functioning?

In this case, when our customer took down the hood she discover that there was actually no venting in place. The vented hood literally served no purpose because the proper venting was never installed.

So, her only option was a recirculating venting system that doesn't need to vent outside of the home.
